Youth Activities

  • St. Thomas Aquinas Child Care Program, Eastminster Child Development Center, Junior Achievement, Spartan Village Child Development Center and DRM International Mentoring Program had 15 MSU student volunteers during 2002-2003 - as teacher's aides, assistants, and child care aides.
  • Zeta Tau Alpha sorority adopted a local Girl Scout troop in need of troop leaders during the past year.
  • MSU's Spartan Youth Programs puts on a variety of pre-college programs and activities for local Pre-K through 12th Graders. Examples of Spartan Youth Programs include sports, leadership programs, college preparation programs, and art programs.
  • Kappa Alpha Theta sorority annualy hosts the Theta Grill-Off . The fundraising event brings together members of the MSU Greek Community in a backyard cooking competition. Each chapter chooses a theme and grills in relation to their theme. The Grill-Off benefits CASA- Court Appointed Special Advocates, a group of trained community volunteers which provides a voice for abused and neglected children in court.

    In addition, Kappa Alpha Theta holds many other philanthropic events including Bingo competitions at Whitehills Retirement home, a 60's Style Sock-Hop and flower planting in the community.

  • The MSU Art Department sponors a Saturday Art Program (432-0181) during fall and spring semesters for children ages 7-18. Approximately 200 area children participate in this program each semester. Children are instructed by MSU Art Education senior students and get 14 total hours of instruction in drawing, painting, sculpture, or ceramics for a low fee that covers the costs of materials. MSU students gain valuable practice in the art of teaching.
  • During the spring of each year the students of the College of Veterinary Medicine organize and run the Vet-a-Visit program. This free, one-day program has over 4,000 visitors annually. Vet-a-Visit opens the college to visitors with many displays and hands-on activities related to veterinary medicine.
  • Also during the spring of each year, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources sponsors Small Animals Day. On this day the college's teaching and research facilities are open to the public. Children and adults learn about the beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, poultry, swine, and many other animals that are part of the agriculture industry in the State of Michigan. The event is run by the CANR Student Senate.
